Mac lock screen shortcut: Control-Command-Q

Press Control-Command-Q to lock your Mac. The login screen appears at once and your apps keep running behind it, so you unlock right where you left off with your password or Touch ID. On a keyboard with Touch ID, one short press of the Touch ID key locks it too.

Locking your Mac takes one shortcut and less than a second. Most people still walk away with their inbox open.

Lock it every time you stand up

Coffee, a meeting room, the person at the next desk. Your Mac doesn’t know the difference between a two-minute break and an hour away, so treat every time you stand up the same way: Control+Command+Q.

The reason is boring and real. An unlocked Mac with your email open can reset the password of nearly every other account you own. That’s a lot to leave on a café table.

Do it on purpose for a week and your hand starts doing it without you, the same way Command+W closes a tab.

💡 Tip: Your apps keep running behind the lock. The document you were typing in is still there, cursor and all, when you come back.

Lock, sleep or log out: pick the right one

Three shortcuts sound alike and do different things.

ShortcutWhat happensUse it when
Control+Command+QLocks the screen. Apps keep running. You step away, even for a minute
Control+Shift+PowerPuts the displays to sleep (keyboards without Touch ID)You want the screen off and dark
Shift+Command+QLogs you out after you confirm. Your apps quit. You’re done for the day on a shared Mac

Lock is the one you want ninety percent of the time. It’s instant, and you come back to exactly where you were.

On a Mac keyboard with Touch ID, the Touch ID key doubles as the power button: one short press locks the screen. That’s the fastest lock there is, and it works without looking.

Make a sleeping display lock too

Display sleep only protects you if macOS asks for your password when the display wakes up. Check the setting once:

System SettingsLock ScreenRequire password after screen saver begins or display is turned off

Set it to Immediately. Anything longer gives whoever sits down at your Mac a window to look around without a password.

Unlock as fast as you lock

Locking feels annoying when unlocking is slow. Make the way back in one touch:

  • Touch ID on Macs and keyboards that have it. Rest a finger on the key and you’re in.
  • Apple Watch, if you wear one. Your Mac unlocks when you sit down with it on your wrist:
System SettingsTouch ID & PasswordApple Watch

Once unlocking costs nothing, locking stops feeling like a punishment.

A corner that locks, without accidents

You can also lock by throwing the pointer into a corner of the screen. That’s a hot corner set to Lock Screen.

The danger is obvious: you lock yourself out mid-sentence every time the pointer drifts there. The fix is a modifier key. Hold Command while you choose Lock Screen for the corner, and the corner only fires while Command is held down.

Hot corners on Mac covers the full setup and the one corner we actually keep.

From your launcher

If you use Raycast, type lock and press Enter. Its built-in Lock Screen command is one more way to get there, handy when your hands are already on the launcher.

Two keys, one second, every time you stand up.
